The National Online Early Language Learning Assessment  | An adaptive assessment for young learners

CASLS: As a National Foreign Language Resource Center, the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon innovates in world language teaching and learning by providing research-based solutions to materials creation, program implementation, and evaluation and assessment.

NOELLA: Sonja Burrows served as a research fellow on the CASLS-developed National Online Early Language Learning Assessment (NOELLA) of Spanish, an online, computer-adaptive assessment for young language learners. In this capacity, Sonja Burrows helped to develop test items for the Spanish assessment that would later become the STAMP (STAndards-based Measurement of Proficiency) 4S designed for students in second to sixth grade. STAMP 4S is now produced and distributed by Avant Assessment.

Research and Development: Sonja Burrows served as a research fellow in editing, piloting and revising Spanish test items for NOELLA, later coordinating a large pilot test effort across multiple states to evaluate and revise early iterations of the assessment based on pilot data. As part of this work, Sonja attended and presented at conferences to discuss and share the goals and outcomes of NOELLA. Throughout her fellowship at CASLS, Sonja partnered with linguists, language teachers, second language acquisition experts, test item writers and editors, and language learners to develop and improve NOELLA.

Sonja Burrows served as research fellow on this assessment project as part of her work with the Center for Applied Second Language Studies at the University of Oregon while earning her PhD. Please send a message to request more information.
